Cosa ci dicono i numeri dei voli.

200px-Flight_numbersI numeri dei voli non sono generati a casaccio, seguono standard delle compagnie e regole pratiche.

La sigla di due lettere identifica la compagnia, tipo AZ per Alitalia, AF per Air France, LH per Lufthansa, P8 per Pantanal Lineas Aereas, e via dicendo. I codici vengono forniti dalla IATA, International Air Transport Association.

La scelta dei numeri è di pertinenza delle compagnie. Generalmente meno cifre sono e più redditizia, o più prestigiosa, è la rotta. Air New Zealand NZ6 collega Auckland AKL con Los Angeles LAX, e prosegue per Londra LHR come NZ2, ma torna da Londra LHR su Los Angeles LAX con il NZ1.

Il primo numero indica la zona geografica, il continente. Per il Nord America Alitalia usa il 6, AZ630 da Roma FCO a Miami MIA; Lufthansa il 4, LH470 da Francoforte FRA a Toronto YYZ; Air India l’1, AI101 da Delhi DEL a New York JFK. Per l’Asia Alitalia usa il 7 come Lufthansa, United Airlines l’8.

Il volo di ritorno è un numero maggiore, o inferiore, a quello di andata: Alitalia AZ1471/AZ1472 da Roma FCO a Venezia VCE a Roma FCO.

I voli in codeshare hanno spesso quattro cifre ed iniziano con un numero alto: Delta DL6588 è operato da Alitalia AZ610 da Roma FCO a New York JFK.

Alcuni numeri di volo non sono più stati usati: American Airlines AA11da Boston BOS a Los Angeles LAX è rimasto inutilizzato dall’attacco alle Torri dell’11 di settembre 2001. Air France AF447, da Rio de Janeiro GIG a Parigi CDG è rimasto inutilizzato dall’incidente del 1 giugno 2009.

Flights numbers aren’t chosen randomly, but follow airlines standards and practical rules.

The two letters code identifies airlines: like AZ for Alitalia, AF for Air France, DL for Delta Air Lines, LH for Lufthansa, P8 for Pantanal Lineas Aereas. Codes are assigned by IATA, International Air Transport Association.

Numbers choise is up to airlines. Generally the lower the number the most important, or prestigious, is the route. Air New Zealand NZ6 connects Auckland AKL with Los Angeles LAX, then continues to London LHR as NZ2, but it comes back from London LHR to Los Angeles LAX as NZ1. Tradition wants that if an airline has a flight #1, this is to or from London LHR.

First number gives a hint on the geographical area, the continent. For North America’s flights Alitalia uses the 6, AZ630 from Rome FCO to Miami MIA; Lufthansa the 4, LH470 from Frankfurt FRA to Toronto YYZ; Air India the 1, AI101 from Delhi DEL to New York JFK. For Asia  flights Alitalia uses number 7, same does Lufthansa, United Airlines uses the 8.

Round trips are usually one number lower, or higher, Alitalia AZ1471/AZ1472 from Rome FCO to Venice VCE to Rome FCO.

Codeshare flights are usually identified by four digits and begin with a high number: Delta DL6588 is operated by Alitalia AZ610 from Rome FCO to New York JFK.

Some flights numbers have been retired: American Airlines from Boston BOS to Los Angeles LAX has never been used again after the 9/11 attack. Air France AF447, from Rio de Janeiro GIG to Paris CDG has been retired after the June 1, 2009 incident.
